Welcome to Lobster Yards! An artist takeover of Borough Yards by acclaimed contemporary artist Philip Colbert, presented by Borough Yards and curated by New Public. 22.08.25 – 30.10.25 Situated between the South Bank and Borough Market, Borough Yards sat at the heart of London’s favourite culinary and cultural quarter. Its historic arches and striking contemporary architecture provided the perfect backdrop for Colbert’s hyperpop world of large-scale sculptures and site-specific vinyl installations. Famed for his iconic lobster alter ego, Colbert transformed Borough Yards into a hyperpop environment of large-scale sculptures and vinyl interventions. Five sculptures were located throughout the site, each dressed in playful, surreal costumes referencing pop symbols, reimagining the lobster as a shape-shifting character. By reinterpreting these symbols through the lobster, a motif of transformation, absurdity and resilience, Colbert invited viewers to consider how meaning is constructed in a media-saturated world and how cultural icons evolve over time. In addition to the sculptures, site-specific vinyl installations activated the space, including a towering lobster wrapping around a railway column and a bold vinyl design stretching across a railway arch, merging Colbert’s hyperpop aesthetic with the site’s industrial infrastructure. These interventions blurred the line between architecture and artwork, turning everyday structures into unexpected canvases. Lobster Yards was a celebration of art for all, a surrealist response to the city that brought contemporary art beyond the gallery and into the public realm.
