Barrafina, Parrillan and Bar Daskal to open in Borough Yards

6 October 2021 – Harts Group will open Barrafina, Parrillan and Bar Daskal at Borough Yards, London SE1 9DG in early 2022. The restaurants will be among the first to open at the large-scale new shopping and dining district, set within a series of reimagined Victorian brick railway arches, viaducts and warehouses and across new open public spaces.

The Borough Yards site is just two minutes’ walk from Borough Market and connects to the South Bank at its other side. This will be the first south-east London location for Barrafina and Parrillan, as well as the new Bar Daskal.

Barrafina Borough Yards will have 32 covers round its archetypal marble bar, a bookable snug or private dining room of 16 covers and 16 covers at tall tables overlooking the bar. The menu, led by executive chef Angel Zapata-Martin, will follow the format of the existing Barrafina main menus, with their classic Spanish tapas dishes plus some new plates unique to the location. As with the other Barrafinas, Borough Yards will have a daily changing specials menu, devised by the chefs and using the best seasonal produce.

Parrillan Borough Yards will progress the successful first Parrillan opened at Coal Drops Yard, King’s Cross in 2019. It will offer para picar and beautiful seafood, meat and vegetables, cooked by the guests themselves over mini parrilla grills on their table. The chefs will also use a wood-fired grill to cook the stunning ingredients gently over the flames.

The new Bar Daskal will be a Spanish wine and sherry bar, offering cold tapas. The bar is named after Sam, Eddie and James Hart’s grandfather Vladimir Daskalof, a Bahaus artist (1930s), Ballearic painter, sculptor, designer and sailor (1940s-60s) who worked under the name ‘Daskal.’ The Bulgarian Vladimir and his Scottish wife, Helen, fell in love with the beautiful Mallorcan village of Estellencs and settled there after having lived a life on the seas aboard their sailing boat for years. In Estellencs, they built the house that the Hart brothers’ mother Stefa grew up in, and that Sam, Eddie and James visited each year as they grew up and still visit with their own families to this day. Bar Daskal will show a rare permanent exhibition of Daskal’s artworks, which have largely been in private collections until now. The design of the space will also be inspired by the house in Estellencs and its surrounding area.

Sam Hart says, “My love of Spain and its cuisine began as a child in the house my grandfather built in the small village of Estellencs. Even though Barrafina was largely modelled on Barcelona’s Cal Pep, the legacy of C’an Daskal has been an ever-present influence throughout my career.  It is wonderful to honour these memories by bringing Bar Daskal, Barrafina and Parrillan south of the river.”

Barrafina, Parrillan and Bar Daskal are the latest in a series of names to be the among first to take spaces at Borough Yards, alongside Paul Smith, Everyman Cinema and The Office Group.
